Nag Tibba Trek from Dehradun: Route, Distance, Difficulty & Snow Season

Nag Tibba trek illustration with summit trail

Nag Tibba is the trek that turns a lot of Dehradun people into trekkers. At about 3,020 metres (roughly 9,900 feet), it’s the highest point of the Nag Tibba range, and the view from the top takes in a long line of snow peaks on a clear day. Best of all, you can do it over a weekend.

Here’s how to plan it from Dehradun, whether you’re going with a trek group or on your own.

Why Nag Tibba is so popular

  • It’s close. You can leave Dehradun on Saturday morning and be home on Sunday evening.
  • It’s beginner-friendly. The trail is steady rather than technical, so first-timers with basic fitness can do it.
  • It’s good in every season. Snow in winter, rhododendrons in spring, green forests after the monsoon.
  • The summit view. On a clear day you can see a wide sweep of Himalayan peaks.

How to reach Pantwari from Dehradun

The usual route goes Dehradun – Mussoorie – Kempty Falls – Nainbagh – Pantwari. It’s about 85 km and takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic around Mussoorie.

  • By car or bike: the easiest way. Start early to avoid the Mussoorie traffic.
  • By bus: buses run from Dehradun towards Nainbagh and Purola. Get off at Nainbagh and take a local shared jeep to Pantwari.
  • With a trek group: most organised treks include pickup from Dehradun, which saves a lot of hassle.

The trek route

Day 1: Pantwari to base camp. The trail climbs steadily through fields, small villages and then oak and rhododendron forest. Most groups camp near the Nag Tibba base camp area. Expect around 5 to 6 hours of walking.

Day 2: Summit and back to Pantwari. Start early, before sunrise, for the climb to the top. It’s about 1.5 to 2 hours from the base camp. Spend some time at the summit, then come back down to Pantwari the same day.

There’s a small Nag Devta temple near the top, which is where the trek gets its name.

Nag Tibba in winter

From December to February, the upper part of the trail is often under snow, and the summit can be properly white. It’s beautiful, but it’s also cold: night temperatures can drop well below freezing.

  • Go with an experienced local guide or a registered trek group in winter.
  • Carry thermals, a warm jacket, gloves, a cap and waterproof shoes with good grip.
  • Microspikes help on icy patches.
  • Check the weather before you leave. Turn back if conditions get bad.

What to carry

  • A 30 to 40 litre backpack
  • Trekking shoes with good grip
  • Warm layers (more in winter)
  • A rain jacket or poncho
  • At least 2 litres of water and purification tablets; water sources on the trail are few
  • Snacks like dry fruits, chocolate and energy bars
  • A headlamp, basic first aid and any personal medicines
  • A bag to carry your trash back down

Permits and safety

There’s no special trekking permit for most people doing Nag Tibba. If you want to stay at the forest rest house, you’ll need prior permission from the forest department. Trek groups usually handle any local formalities.

Don’t trek alone, especially in winter. Tell someone your plan, and keep your phone charged, though network can be patchy higher up.
