Sir George Everest’s house is one of the best short outings from Mussoorie. A stone building on an open ridge in the Park Estate area, about 6 km from Library Chowk, with the Doon valley on one side and, on clear days, Himalayan peaks on the other. It’s an easy walk, a great sunset spot, and a little piece of history: this is where the man after whom Mount Everest is named lived and worked.

The history behind the house
Sir George Everest was the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843 and led the Great Trigonometrical Survey, one of the most ambitious mapping projects in history. He built this house and laboratory in 1832 and used it as a base for survey and astronomical work.
Years later, in 1865, the Royal Geographical Society named the world’s highest peak, then known as Peak XV, Mount Everest in his honour. Standing at his house, looking out at the ridges he helped map, is a nice way to feel connected to that story.
How to reach George Everest House
- From Library Chowk on foot: about 6 km along the Hathipaon road. Good if you enjoy walking; the road is mostly gentle.
- By taxi or your own vehicle: drive along Hathipaon road to the parking area near the house, then walk the last 800 m to 1 km uphill.
- From Dehradun: first head to Mussoorie (see our guide on how to reach Mussoorie), then continue from Library Chowk.
The last stretch from the parking is paved but steep in places, and can be rocky and slippery in the monsoon.
What to expect at the top
- The house and museum: the restored stone house, and the Sir George Everest Museum with a cartography section, opened in September 2023. It covers the Great Trigonometrical Survey, old survey instruments and Indian surveyors like Nain Singh Rawat and Radhanath Sikdar.
- The views: the Doon valley on one side and the Aglar valley on the other. On clear days, especially after the monsoon and in winter, you can see snow peaks.
- Open meadows: good for a picnic and photos. It’s one of the most popular sunset spots near Mussoorie.
Best time to visit
- March to June: pleasant weather and long days.
- October and November: clear skies and the best mountain views.
- December to February: cold and windy, with occasional snow. Dress warmly.
- July to September: monsoon fog often hides the view, and the path gets slippery.
Late afternoon is the favourite time of day, for the sunset over the valleys.
Tips for your visit
- Wear proper shoes for the uphill walk.
- Carry a jacket. It’s windy on the ridge, especially in the evening.
- Carry water. Facilities near the house are limited.
- Leave before dark if you’re walking back to Mussoorie.
- Don’t climb on the old structures or leave litter.
