Diwali Shopping in Dehradun 2026: Best Markets for Diwali & Bhai Dooj

Diwali shopping in Dehradun 2026 guide with diyas and Himalayan hills

Diwali is on Sunday, 8 November 2026 this year, Dhanteras is on Friday, 6 November, and Bhai Dooj falls on Wednesday, 11 November. That means the busiest shopping days in Dehradun will be the week of 2 to 7 November, and the Clock Tower area will be packed from about the first weekend of November.

If you live here, you already know the drill: everyone heads to Paltan Bazaar at the same time, nobody finds parking, and you come home with half your list done. This guide is meant to fix that. Below are the markets that are actually worth your time for Diwali and Bhai Dooj shopping, what each one is good for, and when to go so you don’t spend your evening stuck at Ghanta Ghar.

1. Paltan Bazaar: the heart of Diwali shopping

Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) in Dehradun, the starting point of Paltan Bazaar
Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar), where Paltan Bazaar begins.

There’s no Diwali in Dehradun without a trip to Paltan Bazaar. It starts right at the Clock Tower and runs down a long, narrow street packed with shops on both sides. In the festive weeks the whole stretch turns into one big Diwali mela: strings of lights hanging over the shops, stacks of clay diyas on the pavement, rangoli colours in open sacks, and the smell of fresh jalebi somewhere close by.

Good for: diyas, LED lights, rangoli, torans and wall hangings, Lakshmi-Ganesh idols, kurtas and sarees, and steel utensils for Dhanteras.

Local tip: Bargaining is normal here, but be fair about it. Ask two or three shops for the same item before you buy, especially for lights and decor, because prices can vary a lot within the same lane.

Avoid: going by car. The roads around Ghanta Ghar choke up in the evenings during the festive season. Park a little away and walk in, or take an e-rickshaw or Vikram.

2. Hanuman Chowk: dry fruits and puja samagri in bulk

If you’re buying dry fruit boxes for the whole family, or puja items for a big Lakshmi Puja, Hanuman Chowk is where the shopkeepers from smaller markets often buy their own stock. It’s not pretty and it’s not relaxed, but for bulk buying you’ll usually get a better rate here than in the retail shops.

Local tip: Go in the morning and carry your own bags. If you’re making gift hampers, buy loose dry fruits here and pack them at home in nicer boxes. It works out cheaper than ready-made hampers and looks more personal.

3. Indira Market and the Clock Tower lanes

Right next to Paltan Bazaar, Indira Market is a good stop for clothes, especially men’s wear and everyday fashion at street prices. If your Diwali list includes new outfits for the whole family and you don’t want mall prices, combine Paltan and Indira Market in one trip.

4. Pacific Mall, Rajpur Road

When you want branded stuff without fighting for space on a footpath, Pacific Mall on Rajpur Road (Jakhan) is the easy option. It has 100+ brands, a big food court and a PVR, so it works well if you’re shopping with family and want to make an evening of it.

Good for: branded clothes, cosmetics, gift sets, and Bhai Dooj gifts like watches, perfumes and accessories.

Rajpur Road itself is worth a walk too, with showrooms, sweet shops and cafes along the way. Pick up mithai on the way back instead of making a separate trip.

5. Mall of Dehradun, Haridwar Highway

The newest big mall in the city, Mall of Dehradun sits on the Haridwar highway, so it’s handy if you live on the Doiwala, Rishikesh or Haridwar side and want to skip city traffic. It’s a large mall with stores like Croma, Homecentre, Westside, Pantaloons and Lacoste, plus PVR and a Timezone for kids.

Good for: Dhanteras electronics and appliances (Croma), home decor and furnishings (Homecentre), and family clothes shopping in one place.

6. Centrio Mall

Centrio Mall in the Vijay Colony area has Lifestyle, a food court and a PVR. It’s smaller and usually calmer than the two big ones, which is a good thing in Diwali week. If you just need a couple of outfits or a gift and want to be in and out in an hour, this is a solid pick.

7. Tibetan Market, near Parade Ground

By early November the mornings and nights in Doon start getting cold. That makes the Tibetan Market a smart place for Bhai Dooj gifts: jackets, shawls, mufflers, caps and gloves at prices that are hard to beat in a mall. It’s also a nice break from the Diwali crowd at Paltan.

Bhai Dooj gift ideas that people actually use

  • Under ₹500: a good woollen muffler or cap from the Tibetan Market, a dry fruit pack you made yourself, or a box of mithai with a handwritten card.
  • ₹500 to ₹2,000: a shawl or jacket, a perfume or grooming kit from a mall store, or a set of brass diyas they can keep for years.
  • ₹2,000 and above: a smartwatch or earbuds from an electronics store, a branded jacket, or a silver coin if your family follows that tradition.
  • Something local: pahadi products like local honey, Harsil rajma, ghee or herbal teas make a thoughtful gift for siblings living outside Uttarakhand.

When to go (and when not to)

  • Best time: weekday mornings, roughly 10 am to 1 pm, in the week of 2 to 5 November. Shops are stocked, the crowd is lighter, and shopkeepers have time to show you options.
  • Worst time: Dhanteras evening (6 November) and the weekend just before Diwali. Expect slow traffic around Clock Tower, Paltan and Rajpur Road.
  • Diwali day: many shops close early in the evening for their own Lakshmi Puja. Finish your shopping by the afternoon of 8 November.
  • Bhai Dooj: sweet shops are busiest on the morning of 11 November. Order or pick up mithai a day earlier if you can.

A few practical tips

  • Buy clay diyas from local potters. Handmade diyas are back in demand, and they support local families. Soak them in water for a few hours before use so they don’t soak up all your oil.
  • Carry both UPI and some cash. Most shops take UPI now, but small vendors on the pavement may prefer cash when the network is slow in a crowd.
  • Check lights before paying. Ask the shopkeeper to plug in LED strings and test them at the shop. It saves a return trip.
  • Go eco-friendly. Choose marigold and mango-leaf torans, natural rangoli colours and fewer plastic decorations. Your house will look just as good.
  • Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket. Crowded festive markets are the easiest place to lose things.
