Lal Tibba is the highest point in the Mussoorie area, at about 2,275 metres, and on a clear morning it gives you one of the best views of the snow peaks you’ll get anywhere near Dehradun. It sits in Landour, the quiet, older part of Mussoorie above the Mall Road, which means the journey there is half the fun: deodar forests, old churches and the famous Char Dukan cafes.

What you can see from Lal Tibba
On a clear day, the view opens up to a long line of Himalayan peaks. Binoculars and telescopes at the viewpoint cafe help you pick out the peaks, which are often pointed out as including the Kedarnath and Badrinath ranges. On hazy or cloudy days, you might see little more than the forest and valleys, so it’s worth checking the weather and going early.
How to reach Lal Tibba
- By taxi: the easiest option. Taxis from Mussoorie take you up to Landour. Expect to pay a few hundred rupees; some guides mention around ₹500 to ₹600 from Mussoorie.
- By your own car: drive up to the Landour Clock Tower area. The lanes beyond are steep and narrow, and parking near the viewpoint is very limited, especially on weekends.

Walking to Lal Tibba from the Landour Clock Tower
This is one of the nicest walks near Mussoorie. It’s about 3 km uphill one way and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace.
- Clock Tower to the first viewpoint: a steep, paved climb of a little over 1 km, with small shops and cafes along the way.
- On to Char Dukan: another 800 to 900 metres through deodar trees. Char Dukan is a row of small cafes that have been around for about a hundred years, next to St. Paul’s Church. Stop for pancakes and a hot drink.
- Char Dukan to Lal Tibba: about 900 metres more to the viewpoint.
- Optional return loop: come back via the old British cemetery and Kellogg Memorial Church, an old Gothic-style church, then return to Char Dukan.
Wear proper shoes. The road is steep in places, and the walk back down is hard on the knees.
