Getting to Mussoorie is easier in 2026 than it has ever been. The new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway has cut the drive from Delhi to Dehradun to about 2.5 hours, and from Dehradun it’s just 34 km up the hill. The tricky part isn’t the distance anymore. It’s the traffic on the last stretch, especially on weekends.

By air

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, about 58 to 60 km from Mussoorie. It’s well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other big cities.

From the airport, pre-booked taxis and app cabs take around 2 hours to Mussoorie. There’s no direct bus from the airport to Mussoorie, so a taxi is the practical choice.

By train

The nearest railway station is Dehradun, about 34 km from Mussoorie. Popular trains from Delhi include the Shatabdi Express and the overnight Mussoorie Express.

From the station, you have two easy options:

  • Bus: buses to Mussoorie leave from the Mussoorie bus stand right next to Dehradun Railway Station. It’s the cheapest way up and takes around 1.5 hours.
  • Taxi: taxis and app cabs are available outside the station.

By road from Delhi: the new expressway

The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway was inaugurated on 14 April 2026. It runs about 210 km from near Akshardham in Delhi to Dehradun and has cut the Delhi to Dehradun drive from 5 to 6 hours to around 2.5 hours. A one-way trip by car costs roughly ₹670 in tolls.

From Dehradun, follow the Mussoorie road through Rajpur and Kuthal Gate. In total, expect about 4 to 5 hours from Delhi to Mussoorie if you avoid peak traffic.

Buses from Delhi: Uttarakhand Roadways and private operators run Volvo and ordinary buses from Delhi to Dehradun and Mussoorie, especially overnight. Many people take a bus to Dehradun and a local bus or taxi up from there.

By road from Dehradun

This is how most people go up. The road climbs from Rajpur Road past Kuthal Gate and Kolhukhet, with plenty of hairpin bends and great views on the way.

  • Bus: frequent buses from the Mussoorie bus stand near Dehradun Railway Station. Cheapest and easy, but slower and crowded on weekends.
  • Taxi: easy to book anywhere in Dehradun. Agree on the fare before you start, especially for a return trip.
  • App cabs: available from most of the city. Getting one back from Mussoorie in the evening can be harder.
  • Self-drive or scooty: fine for confident drivers. Use a low gear on the way down and don’t overtake on blind bends.

The Mussoorie ropeway: not yet

A ropeway from Purkul in Dehradun to Gandhi Chowk in Mussoorie is under construction and should cut the trip to about 15 minutes. As of October 2026 it isn’t open yet. Follow our ropeway status page for updates.

Where to get off in Mussoorie

Mussoorie’s Mall Road has two ends:

  • Library end (Gandhi Chowk): for hotels and cafes on this side, the George Everest road and Kempty Falls.
  • Picture Palace end: for Kulri, Landour and Lal Tibba.

Tell your taxi which end your hotel is closest to. It can save a long walk with luggage.

Tips to avoid the Mussoorie traffic

  • Leave Dehradun before 8 am on weekends and holidays.
  • Avoid Friday evening and Sunday evening if you can. That’s when the road is at its worst.
  • On snow days, expect jams between Mussoorie and Dhanaulti. Read our guide to snowfall near Dehradun before you go.
  • Park once and walk. Parking on Mall Road is limited and paid. Use the main parking lots and walk or take a cycle rickshaw.
  • Check road status in the monsoon. Landslides can block the road for a few hours after heavy rain.
